Story

LSU MFA Acting Cohort
Actor. Writer. Educator.

Justin Newell is a Jersey based actor, writer, teacher, and graduate of LSU’s MFA Acting Cohort where he received his MFA in Theatre. Additionally, Justin believes to have received a “world class” education in storytelling having trained at The University of Southern California, British American Drama Academy, The Barrow Group Theater, and Tectonic Theatre. Most importantly, it was his time as sanitation engineer in New Jersey that first taught the importance of working as an ensemble and doing whatever it takes to finish the project.

As an actor Justin has performed on major television networks for the shows Lioness, Law and Order:Organized Crime, and All American. Along with his television credits Justin has performed at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, BBC Scotland Radio, Swine Palace Theatre of Louisiana, and The Mclintock Theatre of Los Angeles. Furthermore,

Justin is a member of Towne Street Theater of Los Angeles and Yendor Theatre Company of Newark,NJ; two incredible African American Theater companies that focus on the diversity and nuance of Black Storytelling.

Building community through sports and storytelling are at the focal point of Justin’s work. Formally, he was a middle school theatre teacher in Newark ,NJ and an adjunct acting professor at Louisiana State University. If he’s not teaching theatre he's coaching football in New Jersey, a childhood pastime that took him all the way to the USC Football Team as a defensive back, he believes the teamwork of sports translate seamlessly to the ensemble work of theatre.
